Visiting Nurse Health System | Hospice Atlanta, as a partner with We Honor Veterans, offers a program for our patients who are military veterans to be matched with volunteers who are veterans. We Honor Veterans is a collaboration between the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Veterans Administration and hospices around the country. Volunteers visit, swap stories, talk about shared experiences and lend a compassionate ear. Volunteers are specially trained to support patients and their families during the difficult time end-of-life brings.

Hospice Atlanta has been involved with the collaborative project We Honor Veterans since 2015, a partnership through the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Veterans Administration. Our charge is to determine if our hospice patients have military backgrounds, help our veteran patients navigate their eligible VA benefits, provide education for staff on veteran care, and offer the patient recognition for their service.

As Americans celebrate the country's independence, the July 4 holiday is a natural time to remember and honor the men and women who have bravely served in the armed forces. Among those today are about 19 million military Veterans, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. About...
