2015 Fall Event Recap

The 2015 fall gala, held November 18 at the Cherokee Town Club, exceeded fundraising goals by more than 40% to support hospice patients and their families receiving care in their home, at Hospice Atlanta Center, and through our hospital partners! This year we honored the service and commitment of the Carlos family, a name synonymous with leadership and giving in greater Atlanta. The gala was redesigned this year—instead of a seated dinner as in previous years, this year guests enjoyed a selection of culinary favorites buffet-style, as well as a band and dance floor, experiential auction items to bid on, and several speakers who shared their warm stories about the Carlos family and their experience with our hospice program. The evening was emceed by 11Alive News Anchor Bill Liss, and featured a surprise guest appearance by Georgios Panagiotidis, Consul of Greece in Atlanta, who read a touching letter to honor the Carlos family.

Our guests of honor—Jimmy and Helen S. Carlos, John and Elaine Carlos, and Helen A. Carlos and Ron Hilliard–left no doubt about their generosity and commitment to our hospice program as they encouraged others in the room to do the same during the live auction and appeal. This spirit of philanthropy and compassion for others had its start with parents Eula and Andrew Carlos. Their dream was to open Georgia’s first in-patient hospice center, and they did not rest until they achieved that goal with Hospice Atlanta Center. This legacy of giving back was passed on to their children, as each family member has cultivated a cause near and dear to their heart in support of our community’s greatest needs.

The live and silent auction featured items such as a three-night getaway to Napa valley, several private in-home culinary and musical experiences, and sports and musical memorabilia. Guests generously funded several critical operational and infrastructure needs in our Hospice Atlanta Center through the live appeal, including several items for our residential wing such as frosted French doors, new furnishings for patient rooms and the family room—all designed to make hospice patients and their families feel warm and comfortable.

2016 Save-The-Date

Join us for our next In the Moment-A Celebration of Life to be held on October 27, 2016. Check back in early summer for details.

Special Thanks

Once again we would like to thank the Carlos family, who’s ongoing generosity means so much to so many throughout Atlanta. We also want to thank Northside Hospital, Presenting Sponsor of the evening; an anonymous donor who matched the hospice appeal; and all individual and corporate sponsors for their generous support of this wonderful evening and our hospice patients and their families. We are also grateful to our Host Committee Chairs, Stan and Bonnie Sharp, and everyone who served on the Host Committee and who volunteered their time to make this evening a special one.

Aging Better starts with a community that cares!
Our Visiting Nurse Health System and Hospice Atlanta Home Health and Hospice teams were proud to be part of the Aging Better Expo, hosted by our valued healthcare partner, Kaiser Permanente.
The event brought seniors and community partners together for a day focused on health, wellness, resources and connections that help older adults live and age well in their homes!
Great event connecting one-on-one with seniors, answering questions, sharing information about our full care continuum filled with services to help seniors age in place.

We’re grateful to Kaiser Permanente and all the organizations working together to care for Atlanta’s growing senior community. When we come together, we make our community stronger by bringing information, resources and connection to our seniors to thrive at home.

Grateful for strong community partnerships that help build strong nonprofit leadership.
For the past five years, OnBoard has been an important pipeline for recruiting talented, committed leaders to the Visiting Nurse Health System | Hospice Atlanta Board of Directors. Their work has helped us connect with individuals who bring fresh perspectives, valuable expertise, and a genuine commitment to our mission.
We’ve seen that impact firsthand. Mel Coker, now in her first term as Board Chair, came to our board through OnBoard and stepped into the chair role following Nicole Hart’s successful completion of her term. And now, we are excited to welcome Amy Katnik as the newest leader joining our board through the OnBoard pipeline.
Strong organizations need strong governance, and strong governance starts with finding the right people who are willing to serve.
Thank you, OnBoard, for five years of partnership and for helping Visiting Nurse Health System continue to strengthen the leadership around our board table. We are grateful for the partnership and excited about the leaders still to come.

Today, we celebrate the people who came before us. ❤️
The ones who raised families.
Built communities.
Worked hard.
Loved deeply.
Weathered challenges.
And left a little wisdom behind for the generations that followed.
On Senior Citizens Day, we honor the older adults who have shaped our families and our communities, and remind ourselves that growing older should always come with dignity, respect, connection and care.
Here’s to the stories, memories, lessons and legacies that make every generation matter.

Happy Senior Citizens Day!
